Blog Commenting: A Poll

Okay, so I'm on a never ending quest to figure out the best way to handle all things blogging. One thing that I'm still hashing out is commenting & replying. Let's discuss, shall we?

If someone comments on my blog, I try to make a point to reply to them, especially if they have a question. However, I cannot tell you how many times I've received questions in a comment, but that user doesn't have an email address attached to their profile, therefore I'm unable to reply to their comment. So how about a little Tuesday morning poll?

From here, there are 2 things I want to discuss:

Do you (think you) have an email address attached to your profile? I've talked to a few people who were shocked to find out they didn't. Let's take a little field trip to check & see.

  1. Login to your dashboard via

  2. Once you login, on the left side of the screen (next to your picture) you will see "edit profile" - click it!

  3. Under privacy, do you have the box that says "share my email address" checked? If not, than it doesn't matter if you have a blog or blogger account, people cannot directly reply to you via email. I say go for it! I don't get any spam because of this. If that is a concern of yours, just set up an email account specifically for blogging (if you haven't yet). I promise it will be worth it and you will probably hear back from more people, if you're a commenter, that is.

Moving right along...I've recently noticed some people (author of the original post) replying in the comments. I personally don't check the box that says "send follow-up comments to me", but do most people? I'm afraid I might have missed quite a few replys to things I posted because of not checking to receive follow-up comments.

Thanks for bestowing all your blog knowldege (blogedge?) upon me.

  1. I do not have an e-mail address because my e-mail address has my last name in it, and since this internet is a little crazy sometimes, I'd prefer not to have my full name out there for all to see. I try to respond back on that person's blog, and rarely ever try to e-mail anyone. Just my personal preference and something my hubby would prefer as well. I think he is more concerned with it than I am, actually!

  2. I meant to say I don't have an e-mail address linked to my blog! I do have an e-mail address! I am not some backwoods person with no electricity ha!

  3. Since I am very new to this whole blogging thing-you just taught me something new. I had no idea that my email wasn't showing

  4. As far as responding it depends on what is being posted...sometimes I will respond to email (if the person has one) and other times I will respond in the I don't know if that helps/answers your question or not....haha.

As far as an email for my blog, I did set up an account just for my blogging and it has worked out great! So like you I would recommend it for anyone thinking about using one, I haven't had any problems with it.

    Hope these answers help you!!!!

  5. I had no idea my email was not showing - I thought it was all this time. Thanks.

For the comments questions... I am a little lost on the best way to handle them. I rarely never comment on one of my own posts. If a comment asks a question - I try to answer it in a later blog post. So far the questions have been ones that answering them in the blog works out. If it was more personal - I would probably e-mail the commenter (is that a word?)

  6. Thank you for stopping by my blog!

I voted in your little survey! I usually just follow up by replying to their comment from my email, since my comments go directly to my email.

I look forward to following your adoption process. My husband is adopted so we have a big heart for adoption at our house! :)

  7. Thank you for posting this, it needed to be said. Commenting is so irritating sometimes, I never get a reply and who has time to go back to 500 blogs to see if someone replied to their comment? I wish blogger would invent a way to make this easier. But I have my email address enabled now, so I'm hoping other people do too.

  8. I guess if the comment is personal, I'll use email. Other than that, normal commenting for me, lol.

Another thing about commenting - it irks me {IRKS ME!} when people don't have their comment section pop out. AGH! LOL

  9. Very good blog today. Although when I respond to a comment/question someone has asked me on my blog I go to their blog and leave a comment on their most recent blog. I only do it that way as that is how someone replied to me once so I "thought" that is how it was done.

But with your post I will do things differently now. going to ponder.

  10. This blogging etiquette stuff is stressful, isn't it? Good idea to find out what other people do!

  11. If you ask me a question in the comments, I expect you to have your e-mail enabled if you want an answer. If you do have e-mail enabled, I respond as soon as I can. I am not going to spend a ton of time looking for your e-mail to respond. Maybe that's not nice, but it's my policy.

  12. I wish everone had an email attached. It would make things easier.

  13. I have one comment about email addresses--I use my school email address only and my school does not allow too much junk mail, so I make sure that I "know" the blogger before I give them my email.

About the comments--I usually try to respond to a comment by visiting their blog and making a comment. I feel like if they have visited my blog, I should check them out too :)

I can't wait to see how your poll turns out. Thanks for thinking of this.

    Lisa :)

  14. I very rarely answer questions as a comment...but I have done it recently. It seems that typically posters who ask me a specific question are people who I have contact with outside of blogger, so I will answer via email, etc.

  15. I cannot wait to see all your responses. I have always wondered the best way to handle this too.

You are way more popular than me, though ; )...I think everyone who has ever commented on my blog I know somehow.

  16. Hi. I know everyone doesnt have an email attached which would be great. That being said, I respond to emails that people send me but I never expect any blogger to respond to my comment. If I have a question, I will email them directly.

  17. I agree that it's really frustrating when people don't have an email attached. That being said, I don't always respond to comments directly.

I never respond within my own comment section either. Ever. Why? Because I personally don't have time to go back later and check for a reply so I don't expect that people would check back for mine.

Most of the time, I figure comments are rhetorical based and don't really need a reply anyhow. If it's something that really needs an answer, I'll be sure to reply.

I decided that I had to pick and choose between replying to a comment or going to the commenter's blog and commenting on their posts. I choose to go comment on their blogs instead. I like the back and forth reading and commenting because I really feel like I'm getting to know people and real friendships are formed, at least for me.

I used to be able to reply to comments and go to the blogs and comment there as well, but I simply don't have the time anymore to always do both.

I'm a HUGE commenter. I spend hours every day commenting!

  18. so glad you did this, cause I am clueless when it comes to this!

  19. Thanks for asking this question because I have no idea either!

  20. I only follow the comments if I'm interested in the conversation going on there. As for replying to comments, it's a mixed bag. If I think it will add to the comments conversation, I do it there. I respond via email if there's a question or I just want to reply. I try to always respond by visiting the blogger back. I don't make a habit of replying to everyone in the comments, because I know that most people comment and don't come back to look for replies.

I love hearing from my readers and I appreciate every single comment left here! If you have a question, I will do my very best to answer it as soon as I can. If your email address is not linked to your blogger account (and if you're not sure, then it probably isn't) please leave it in your comment so that I can respond to you much quicker. Thanks for stopping by! :)
