Baby Martin: Month 6 & Registering

As you have come to expect, I am about a month behind on pictures - we'll blame that on all the traveling. Yesterday I hit 28 weeks and I absolutely cannot believe I have 12 weeks left...where has time gone?! I feel like I have lots of time when I say 28 weeks, but then when I reverse it to the countdown of 12 weeks, I get a little panicky and my right eye starts twitching, seeing whereas I haven't really done anything to his room. But that's what this week is for! I will take (and post!) 7 month pictures soon...here we are through 6 months.
We are definitely growing!! I'm feeling great overall. Some leg cramps at night, but they've gotten better...I really can't complain. Pregnancy has been a joy! I passed my glucose test, so that was a relief...I was a little nervous given the amount of sugar and sweets I seem to consume these days. I had an "encounter" with another pregnant girl while I was waiting for my blood to be drawn. I brought a book to read, so I was not exactly looking to chat. Needless to say, our conversation went something like this:

Girl: You're pregnant.
Me: Yes, I am.
Girl: How far along are you?
Me: 26 weeks.
Girl: WOW - I can't believe how much bigger you are than me! I'm 25 weeks so we're close - but wow - you're a lot bigger. I wonder why?
Me: I guess that's what happens when you can't stop eating.
Girl: Is this your first baby?
Me: Yes.
Girl: Really? This is my 2nd. How old are you?
Me: 29.
Girl: Wow! Aren't you scared to be so old & having a baby? Are you afraid something will be wrong with it? This is my 2nd baby. I'm 19. I don't want to be old having babies.
Me: No, I'm not scared. This is our miracle baby from God and that's all that matters.
Girl: Oh. Well are you married?
Me: Yes.
Girl: Well get ready, cause he'll probably run off after the baby's born.
Me: smile

At this point, I decide to go upstairs to my husband's clinic because I needed to take him something anyway, and I knew time was running out for how long I could bite my tongue. So I leave for a little bit, and come back...conversation immediately resumes.

Girl: Is your husband a doctor?
Me: What?
Girl: After you left that lady that was sitting here told me your husband was a doctor and I better quit being rude to you.
Me: Oh.
Girl: So is he?
Me: Umm....yes, but that doesn't really matter.
Girl: What's his name? Is he Dr. Martin? That's what that lady told me.
Me: Yes.
Girl: Oh I love him! He talks about you a lot. Mostly good stuff.

And by the grace of God, my name was called that instant to get my blood drawn. The whole thing was silly. Honestly, I feel sorry for the girl. Yes, she drove me crazy and at the time I wanted to mouth off like a billion different things, but I'm thankful I didn't. I just still couldn't believe some of the things she said...and more importantly, am thankful I actually was able to control my tongue. :)

Moving right along, we are finally going to register this weekend!! I get so overwhelmed looking at everything, so I'm hoping it goes okay. Please share any advice you have below - must haves, things you never used, etc. I know it will vary by baby, but any help would be appreciated. Oh and here are 2 pack & plays we're considering. The things we want are: changing table, portable, bassinet/newborn sleeper. We really like the first one, and it has really good reviews, so that's what we're leaning towards. The second one is okay also - it's nice because it has a larger diaper changing station, but I don't know how practical that really is. I have yet to see either of these in person so that might change my mind.

Graco Pack 'n Play with Newborn Napper
Carter's Comfort Center Play Yard and Changer

If you have either of these, or another one altogether that is similar to what we're looking for, I'd love to hear about it. Thanks for your help!

  1. Your conversation just made me laugh! :)

Registering is so much fun! My youngest is 14 months and I cannot believe how baby gear has been updated since then! Wow! All I can say is that all three of my children LOVED their swings (each swing). They (3 different ones...updated each time) were such a blessing!

  2. Wow, I praise you for your restraint when talking to that YOUNG woman. And when is 29 too old to be having babies? I think it's the perfect age. :-D

I am 21 weeks pregnant, and I registered for the first playyard you displayed. Can't tell you if it will work, but I really liked the looks and the reviews on it.

  3. Bless your heart! If it were me, I'd be thinking to myself "Am I on some type of crazy game show?!" I give you much praise for that ordeal!

REGISTERING IS SOOOO MUCH FUN! I worked on my registry for what felt like my entire pregnancy. :) I would see something new and be like, "OH - I need to add that too!"

  4. Some people just don't know the right things to say, do they? I used the Chicco Discovery playard/bassinet and I really liked it!!

    You look great!!!!

  5. It seems like motherhood brings with it A LOT of ridiculous conversations. I'm sorry. :o( You look awesome!!

  6. I'm sorry but I'm dumbfounded. For real? I don't think I could have handled that conversation nearly as well as you did!!!

    And you look GREAT!!!

  7. Oh girl. Isn't it sad that people actually think those things!? Have fun registering. I got so overwhelmed, but it's fun to go back and tweak what you've done. We registered for a Graco pack-n-play too and while we haven't used it, we did put it together and it seems sturdy and was easy enough to set up. We were also told the Graco sweetpeace swing was the way to go, so we registered for that too.

  8. Wow- people say the weirdest things! I can't believe she kept on talking after the receptionist said something to her!!

You look amazing though, and your baby is going to be SO precious! :)

  9. Your conversation made me laugh...and mad at the same time. Weird gir...for sure!

Sarah...you look adorable in your pictures...I can't wait to look just like you one day (hopefully soon).

I am glad you had a great time on your vacation...even with some of the problems.

    Lisa :0

    P.S. Praying for you daily!

  10. Oh my...you definitely have my respect. If ignorance is bliss, she is probably one really happy girl :)
You look beautiful and I'm glad to hear you are feeling well. Have fun with the registry!

  11. We don't have that exact Graco, but we do have a different one that is similair and we loved it with C. Still in perfect condition to use this time around. The #1 thing I regret getting was the diaper champ. To me, it was a waste. I put it away after about the 2nd or 3rd week. And you look great!

  12. What a weird and sad conversation! Your responses were great, though. Honest and gracious.

Ahhh. I love baby furniture and accessories. So much fun! How funny that the previous commenter didn't like the diaper champ when I was going to comment that it was one of my most-used items :)

  13. You are looking so amazing!

When did 29 become "old" and 19 become normal?

  14. Oh dear! Some people have NO filter and it always floors me! I LOVED being pregnant! Loved the huge belly, the 'secret' that I had that just me and the baby knew about.....loved ALL of it. People asked me if I was having twins more than once, but whatever-as I see it, being pregnant is the only time you can assist God in a miracle. So, the stretch marks are worth it.

As for the pack and play? Both good choices, I think. Ours is 9 months old, so it is totally outdated! LOL! Think of how you will be using it. Is your house one floor? Will the baby be in your room? Think of how many "stations" you will want to have around to make it easiest for you. Our house is 3 floors, so our son was in our room (his is on the 3rd floor) for 4 months and we needed to have a spot in our room that housed everything. I love the idea of the napper along with the other features.

Oh, I would recommend the Aqua Bouncer from BRU-not only is is baby crack, it is the ONLY reason I am able to shower most days. I added the company to my Christmas card list. That good.

SO excited for you guys! It really IS as fun as everyone says.

  15. Good for you for holding your tongue. What was UP with that girl???

I don't have a little one yet but all my friends and family members have loved the Graco PNP. :)

  16. How blessed you look and how blessed the girl may have been by you holding your tongue. Hopefully she saw that a "woman" can be married, pregnant and have a mostly happy ever after.

  17. You look fabulous!!! I can't believe the nerve of some people!

We just bought the basic pack-n-play, no bells or whistles and didn't end up using it at all so they it ended up going to my mother-in-laws when she watched him for him to sleep in when I went back to work.

He really slept in his crib from the beginning - he did sleep some in the car seat and swing. But I used the Supreme sleep nest in his crib until he was almost 4 1/2 - 5 months (when he started rolling over) and he was also swaddled until then as well! This is what worked for us, you will just have to wait and see what works for you and your little one! But I didn't want to spend all that money on a pack-n-play and not use it and for us it worked out.

Glad you had a good vacation! Can't wait to see the nursery when you get it finished!

  18. Wowzers about the conversation! That girl (and she is a girl) definitely had *ahem* a lot to say. I kind of feel sorry for her too.

    You look amazing!

Have fun with the registering...lots of exciting decisions to make!

  20. Hi,
I don't know if you've registered yet, but I am 26 weeks along with our first and we registered a week ago- it was fun!
I just wanted to reccomend the book Baby Bargains to you if you haven't heard of it. We use it for a lot of decisions about brand and safety. Just make sure you get the most recent edition. It's fabulous for first time moms, since the baby market is so overwhelming!

  21. Sounded like someone needed to just stay quiet for a while that day - haha. You are very patient. You look beautiful and am glad all is going well with you. You are radiant!

  22. ps...I had my second kid right before I turned 34. I'm feeling ancient right now :o) :o)

  23. I think you look beautiful! Registering is so fun....enjoy it! We couldn't live without our bouncy seat, the Bumbo, the Boppy pillow, the jumperoo, and the exercaucer. I also loved the Baby Bjorn and my Medella breast pump.

  24. HI, I just found your blog and first of all Congratulations!

I have the top newborn napper and love it. I purchased it before I had our fourth child and think it was a great investment. I will say that he outgrew the little newborn sleeper in about 3 months. He's a very long baby and any of my other kids would have probably been able to stay in it longer. It was perfect for us since he had reflux and needed his head to be slightly elevated. It kept me from having to let him sleep in his bouncy seat, like our 3rd kiddo had to do. I highly recommend it! If you have any questions about baby gear, please feel free to e-mail me! I'd be happy to answer any questions you have. nvites4u(at)comcast(dot)net.
