E's First Owie

E's fingernails grow crazy fast. As in, they need to be cut like every other day or he claws the heck out of my chest when he's nursing. So I try to stay on top of it, and have managed to do so without incident. Until yesterday.

I was talking to my friend Kellie on the phone, and E was just chilling on his playmat, so I thought it'd be the perfect time for a little mani. (Yes, I know it's better to do it while they're napping, but I always swaddle him to put him to sleep, and I kept forgetting to leave his hands out so I could trim his nails, so it was now or never. Okay maybe not never, but much later - and patience isn't one of my strong points.)

As luck would have it, as I was getting ready to clip his pointer nail, he jerked his hand away and let out quite possibly the saddest cry known to man-kind (with Kellie as my witness - I swear, it was heart-breaking.) His finger started bleeding, and I felt horrible!! I can't believe I hurt my little buddy. :(

He didn't cry for long, but just kept whimpering in pain - he was probably too weak to protest! :( About 5 minutes after the "incident", Patrick called me and he could hear E whimpering, so he asked what was wrong. I go into the whole sob story and how I feel like the worst mother ever, and he just laughs and tells me not to worry; it's no big deal. But of course he can't pass up giving me a hard time, so he says he'll bring his suture kit home so he can stitch E's finger up. Haha, very funny...

While he didn't bring his suture kit home, he did bring this:

Yes, that would be a get-well card for Manny. He thinks he's sooo funny.

Of course it was all in good fun, but just to make sure his little joke didn't land him in the doghouse, he brought mama some flowers. :)

I have a good man. :)

Now I'm off to buy a fingernail file so this never happens again. :)

  1. I used to prop John Parker up in my lap and he would coo and watch me while I did it. It was definitely good times until I clipped his thumb. He went from happy to crying in seconds--He thought we were having a great time and then BAM! Sorry mama! It has to happen at least once right?! :)

  2. I bit the nails off until my boys were about a year old b/c I was so afraid to use the clippers. It worked great!

  4. I can't use clippers...I have to use those little scissors...don't trust myself with the clippers. What a thoughtful and funny guy you have over there! I love all the pictures and stories about motherhood you've posted recently. Sounds like you're loving it!

i haven't had this happen yet, but honestly don't know how i haven't. e is the squirmiest thing ever! usually i wait til she's eating, then i get the hubs to hold the bottle while i clip away. usually works but not always!

  10. Another right of passage into "mommyhood" :) I have done the same thing to both my kids and felt awful both times but they squirm so much - and its much harder on my 2 year old daughter b/c she won't sit still for nothing! I don't dare use the clippers - I also use the little scissors...still scary though!

  12. I think this is a very common first owie among babies. I know of at least 3 babes, of which I can name, whose parents accidently let the clippers get the best of their little finger. It happens! But it is so sad no matter. Mommy guilt is a powerful thing!
It's much easier to bite them during feedings. Sounds weird but it works great.
Your hubby is a doll! So sweet for him to do the kind gestures.

  13. Poor little guy...and poor Mama!!!! But I love the humor that you have brought into the situation! The card is hilarious and it is always nice to get flowers!

I remember when I first cut my dog's nails when he was a puppy-it bled for so long! I felt horrible.....and haven't done it since and he's 13! Luckily I keep my son, Alex, tied down most of day so he can't hurt himself. (Just kidding) ;)

Keep up the good work, girl!

  15. Oh my goodness, his little cry was SO sad!!! Poor Manny!!

The file worked great for me for a while, but I realized he was cutting his face with his nails more frequently, probably because I filed them paper thin. But when he was Manny's age, I just couldn't see them to clip them, and I nipped his finger once too. :(

Just about a month ago I started clipping them and now we have no problems. They are thicker too so they are much easier to see!

Patrick is a good man...always making sure that momma is taken care of!!

  16. Been there, done that. Cried more than Hayden cried when I did it. The card and flowers from Pat? Nice touch. He's a riot!

  17. I did the same thing with my little guys nail and it bled and bled and bled, I swear I thought he was going to bleed to death. I called everyone I could think of because I couldn't get it to stop bleeding and I put so much pressure on it and it still wouldn't stop, the washcloth was full of blood...end the end it was just a little bit that I nicked on his finger but boy it looked bad from all the bleeding, I felt horrible.

From that day on (it was like the
3rd time doing them) I never used clippers and still don't and he is 14 months. I file them! I so understand how you were feeling, but it does happen and they move SO quick!!!
