As promised last week in my guest room tour, here is the tutorial for the artwork I made for over the bed.
As I mentioned in that post, I had a hard time deciding what I should put over the bed. Then one day I remembered the Ballard Designs inspired idea that I'd seen on the Thrifty Decor Chick blog awhile back, and decided it'd be perfect. I did mine just a little differently than she did, but it turned out great. I will note the differences so you can choose the way that would work best for you.
Supplies
12 x 12 boards (how ever many you want for your project)
sandpaper
spray paint
scrapbook paper
Mod Podge
foam brush
picture hangers
1. Go to Lowe's and purchase a large sheet of MDF board, or something similar. (I got something that was a little lighter weight than MDF board, but I'm not sure what it was called.) Ask them to cut it into 12 x 12 pieces. You should be able to get a sheet that would get 10 cuts for about $10.
2. Sand the edges of the boards if needed...basically just to remove any stray splinters.
3. Spray paint the sides and edges of the boards.
If you have a little helper, keep him at a safe distance from the spray paint. (Sorry; you know I have a hard time doing a post without showing his cuteness.)
4. Apply Mod Podge to the front of the board, as well as to the back of the scrapbook paper. Place the paper on the piece of wood carefully, being sure to smooth out any wrinkles. (For this step, she used spray adhesive instead of Mod Podge to affix the paper to the board. I chose to use Mod Podge just so I could have a way to seal it since these will got a lot of sunlight. I think either would work fine.)
5. Allow it to dry, then apply a coat of Mod Podge over the top of the paper to seal it.
6. Attach picture hangers to the back of each board in order to hang them on the wall. (She nailed hers directly to the wall by hammering through the front, so that is another option.)
And you're finished!
This entire project cost me right at $14 (I had the Mod Podge already), & I think it's a great way to get artwork that matches your space exactly.
