Lunch Date & Camera Questions

Yesterday Manny and I met up with Rebekah and Cilla for a fun lunch date. As I've mentioned, Manny is ALL into climbing now, so he spent a lot of the time trying to crawl up the slide. He could get to the corner, but then it got too steep and he couldn't make it any further. So he would start complaining - I'm not sure if it was because he was mad he couldn't get higher, or if he was scared and didn't know how to get down. Needless to say, I had to go save him a couple of times. That was a sight to see. (Or not.)

This is sweet Cilla. Isn't she the cutest thing?! She is such a doll and just makes me laugh...such a cute little personality.
Cilla is on the go but took the time to stop and love on her momma...so cute. Rebekah is one of the sweetest people I know and we could've talked all day...thanks for such a fun time Rebekah! :)

Okay, on to camera questions. I know I ask questions a lot, but y'all are always so helpful, and I love feedback from real-life people...most of which I don't actually know in real life (though I'd love to), but feel like I do...you get what I mean, right? :) And how was that for a run-on sentence? I digress.

Anyway. I think it's safe to say I've turned into a full on momtographer. No, I really don't know what I'm doing, but I like to pretend. I enjoy taking pictures and learning how to get better shots. I have the most basic DSLR and use my 35mm lens 99% of the time. I love that lens, but definitely miss the zoom factor. I was wondering if anyone has the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 lens? I've heard good things about that one but just don't know if it's worth it. If you have it, or another lens you love, would you please share about it? Also has anyone ever rented a lens? I have heard of places that do that but would love to know your experiences if you've rented one before.
And finally, any tips or tricks for self-portraits? (And by that, I mean pictures with Manny - don't worry, I'm not going to start modeling for you.) Patrick got me this remote and this tripod for Christmas, but I'm embarrassed to say I've never used them! I tried to snap a picture of Manny and I the other day and ended up with this. It made me realize that I need to start using the equipment I have. So if you have a tripod, how do you get your kid to look at it? Or set the height? Is it a lot of back and forth?

Okay, sorry for all the questions but I really do appreciate your help! And I've heard from some of you that blogger still won't let you comment, so you can always try signing out and commenting anonymously (I've heard that works) or just email me at sjg_ou at yahoo.com. Thanks so much friends! :)

  1. I don't have a secret about self-portraits with your kids, other than they are much easier with only 1kid! (As opposed to the 3 that I have)

  2. I've had the Tamron you mentioned for a while now. If you're wanting a zoom it's a good one. It was only $350 back when I got it. I hear it's $500 now! I don't use it as much now because I have others with lower apertures that I like better. I think it's probably I good Next lens for you knowing you have the 35 already.

  3. I need photog help too! There are about 5 pictures of Evie and I... total! I also just got a tripod, but it's still in the box. :) Must figure this out, we need proof that we were with our kids all this time!

  6. Love that first pic of you and Manny - y'all are so cute!

I'm so glad you asked about that lens - I've had my eye on that same one! I'm interested to see what kind of feedback you get on it. I love my 50mm 1.8 but need more options when I'm taking portraits and this one seems like a lot of bang for the buck...

  7. Aww. Cute photos. I was going to get the Tamron 28-75 but ended up with the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4. It really is awesome and I love that you can zoom out so far and get a lot more in the photo up close but it also has a great macro feature on it.

  8. Awww...the pics of you guys are so cute!!

I have a Canon Rebel xsi and when I bought it I also got extra long lense. I wish I knew what I was doing when I use it. I think it is a efs 55-250mm. The only time I use it is if I want to take pics far away. I'm sure it does so many things I don't even know about.

I need to take a camera class so bad. I try to act like I know what I'm doing...haha! But I don't have a clue.

  10. I'll be honest- I'm not sure what lenses I have! Guess I should go check! My sister is a pro-photographer and she has rented lenses for special events/weddings. She orders online and they send them overnight. So far, she's had good experiences.

  13. I'm not a a lot of help, but that lens looks like a good one. I use a 35mm fixed lens as well and I love it (minus the no zoom part). I have heard good things about renting. I'd say it's worth it to rent first, so you're not out 500 bucks if you don't like it!! Good luck...you photos are great!
